"Ngầu": how to say cool in Vietnamese

The most common slang way to say "cool" in Vietnamese is ngầu, which describes someone or something that looks tough, stylish or impressive. You might call a leather jacket, a motorbike or a confident stunt ngầu.

How to say ngầu

Ngầu is pronounced roughly "ngow" with a low, falling tone (the huyền tone, marked by the grave accent). The "ng" at the start is the same sound as the end of "sing," which takes some practice at the beginning of a word. Try saying "sing-ow" and then dropping the "si."

What ngầu really means

Ngầu leans toward a particular kind of cool: tough, edgy, bold or striking. Think of:

  • a dramatic entrance
  • sunglasses and a stern expression
  • a sharp outfit or a strong look
  • a daring move, like a skateboard trick
  • a character who stays calm under pressure

It's mostly positive. Saying "ngầu quá!" means "so cool!" There can be a teasing side, though: someone trying too hard to look tough might be called làm ngầu, "acting cool," and that's not a compliment.

Common phrases with ngầu

  • Ngầu quá! "So cool!"
  • Trông ngầu ghê. "Looks really cool."
  • Làm ngầu: "acting cool," posing.
  • Cool ngầu: an English-Vietnamese combo for extra emphasis.
  • Ngầu lòi: a slangy intensifier, roughly "super cool." Usage varies, and it sounds very casual.

Other ways to say cool

Vietnamese has several "cool" words, each with its own shade:

  • chất (chut): stylish, having real character or flair. "Bài này chất ghê" means "this song has real style."
  • đỉnh (deeng): peak, top-tier, awesome. See đỉnh quá and đỉnh của chóp.
  • xịn (seen): high quality, fancy, the real deal. "Điện thoại xịn" is a top-end phone.
  • cool: the English word, widely used by younger people.
  • hay (hai): good, interesting; for ideas, songs or movies more than looks.
  • tuyệt (twee-et): great, excellent; more standard and a little formal.

So a slick jacket is ngầu, a song with flair is chất, an amazing performance is đỉnh, and an expensive gadget is xịn.

Ngầu vs đỉnh vs chất

These overlap, so here's a simple way to tell them apart:

  • Ngầu: tough, bold, edgy cool. About attitude or looks.
  • Đỉnh: the best, top level. About quality or performance.
  • Chất: stylish, with personality. About taste and vibe.

A stunt can be ngầu. Winning a championship is đỉnh. A carefully curated playlist is chất.

Cool in a cartoon

Cartoon cats can be ngầu, too. In Duma Meow, one cat delivers the line Sài Gòn không ngủ. Tôi cũng vậy. ("Saigon never sleeps. Neither do I."), a deadpan, tough-guy line that's pure ngầu energy. Another line, Trời ơi... đỉnh quá! ("Oh wow... so epic!"), shows the đỉnh side of cool.

The deadpan cat, Maelis, is the kind of character who looks ngầu without trying. You can meet her in meet Maelis.

Regional and age notes

Ngầu is used across Vietnam and is familiar to most speakers, though it sounds youthful and casual. Older people may say đẹp (beautiful, nice) or oai (wai, impressive and commanding) for a striking look. Oai carries an old-fashioned dignity: a general on horseback is oai.

In the South, people often add ghê or dữ for emphasis: "ngầu dữ!" In the North, you might hear "ngầu phết" or "ngầu thế."

Example sentences

  • Bộ đồ này ngầu quá! "This outfit is so cool!"
  • Anh ấy lúc nào cũng làm ngầu. "He's always trying to look cool."
  • Cú đá đó ngầu thật. "That kick was really cool."
  • Nhạc phim chất ghê. "The movie soundtrack has real style."

When to use it

Ngầu fits casual conversation, texts and social media. It's a compliment, so it's friendly to use about a friend's new look or a great video. In formal writing, use ấn tượng (impressive) or tuyệt vời (wonderful).

If you only learn one, learn ngầu quá; it's the cool compliment young Vietnamese speakers use most.
