Paris By Night is a long-running Vietnamese-language variety show produced by the Thúy Nga company, mixing music performances, comedy skits, dance and fashion. For decades, its filmed shows have been a fixture in Vietnamese diaspora homes, especially in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia.

What Paris By Night is

Each Paris By Night release is a big, filmed stage show, often several hours long. It's built around a theme, like a songwriter's work, a decade of music, love songs or Tết, and features many singers performing in turn.

A typical show includes:

  • solo performances and duets of Vietnamese songs
  • elaborate stage sets, costumes and dancers
  • comedy sketches (hài kịch)
  • hosts who introduce songs with background stories
  • interviews, tributes or short documentary segments
  • occasional fashion segments, often with áo dài

The episodes are numbered, and there are well over a hundred of them.

Where it came from

Thúy Nga began as a music company in Saigon before 1975. After the war, the family behind it resettled in France and started producing Vietnamese music for the scattered refugee community. Paris By Night was launched in Paris, which explains the name, in 1983.

Production later moved to the US, where much of the Vietnamese diaspora lived, and shows were often filmed in Southern California and other venues in North America. The name stayed even after the shows left Paris.

The hosts

The hosts are a big part of Paris By Night's identity. Nguyễn Ngọc Ngạn, a writer, and Nguyễn Cao Kỳ Duyên became the show's best-known hosting pair. Their introductions, with stories about songs and history, are as memorable to many viewers as the music itself.

How families watched it

Before streaming, Paris By Night was sold on VHS tapes and later DVDs, rented from Vietnamese video stores or passed between relatives. A new release could be an event. Families watched together, sang along and replayed favorite performances. For many children of refugees, it was one of the main ways they heard Vietnamese music, comedy and spoken Vietnamese outside their home.

Tết and year-end specials became especially beloved. Watching a Paris By Night tape during the Lunar New Year holiday is a shared memory for plenty of Vietnamese families abroad.

Why it mattered

Paris By Night did more than entertain:

  • Preserving culture: it kept pre-1975 songs, styles and performers in the public eye.
  • Connecting a scattered community: viewers in many countries watched the same shows.
  • Language exposure: it gave kids a fun way to hear Vietnamese.
  • Launching careers: it gave singers a global stage.

It also reached audiences inside Vietnam, where copies circulated informally for years.

Music you'll hear

Paris By Night covers a broad range: sentimental pre-1975 songs, bolero ballads, love songs, upbeat nhạc trẻ (young music), occasional cải lương and folk numbers, and covers of international hits. If you're curious about these styles, see what is Vietnamese bolero and cải lương.

The comedy segments

The skits are a fan favorite. They often play on family life, generation gaps, life as immigrants, marriage and misunderstandings between Northern and Southern speakers. Some lines and characters from these skits are still quoted at family gatherings. For more on Vietnamese comedy, see Vietnamese comedy: the shows and sketches people quote.

Paris By Night in the wider scene

Paris By Night sits at the center of the diaspora entertainment world described in Vietnamese singers in America. Other companies produced similar shows, but Paris By Night is the name most people recognize, even those who've never watched a full episode.

If you're new to it, start with a Tết special on the official YouTube channel; it's the easiest way to see why so many families kept the tapes.
