V-pop is short for Vietnamese pop music: modern, mainstream songs sung in Vietnamese, usually with polished production and big music videos. It draws on Western pop, K-pop, hip-hop, R&B and electronic music, and increasingly mixes in Vietnamese folk melodies and instruments.

If you have heard a catchy Vietnamese song with a slick video on YouTube, it was almost certainly V-pop.

What does V-pop sound like?

There is no single sound, but common features include:

  • Strong melodies with a memorable chorus.
  • Modern production: synths, programmed beats, EDM drops and R&B grooves.
  • Ballads alongside dance tracks. Emotional love songs are a big part of the genre.
  • Rap verses inside pop songs, reflecting how popular Vietnamese rap has become.
  • Folk touches in some songs: traditional melodies, instruments or imagery.

Because Vietnamese is a tonal language, songwriters have to fit melodies around the tones of the words so lyrics stay understandable. That shapes how V-pop melodies move.

Where did V-pop come from?

Vietnamese popular music has a long history, from mid-century ballads and bolero to the songwriting of composers like Trịnh Công Sơn. Modern V-pop grew from the 1990s and 2000s as Vietnam's economy opened up and international music became easier to hear.

Television, music competitions and later the internet helped build a star system. YouTube in particular became central: it is where most major releases premiere, and view counts are a key measure of a hit.

How is V-pop different from bolero?

  • Bolero is older, slower and sentimental, focused on voice and storytelling lyrics.
  • V-pop is newer, beat-driven and shaped by global trends.

Many listeners enjoy both, and karaoke nights often mix them. See what Vietnamese bolero music is for the contrast.

How is V-pop different from K-pop?

V-pop has clearly been influenced by K-pop in areas like music video style, fashion and choreography. But the industries work differently:

  • Solo artists dominate V-pop. While Vietnam has had groups, the biggest stars are mostly solo singers and rappers.
  • Training systems are less formal. K-pop is known for large agencies that train idols for years before debut. V-pop artists often rise through competitions, online popularity or independent work.
  • Rap and indie crossover is common. Rappers and indie musicians move into the mainstream easily.

Who are some well-known V-pop artists?

A few names to start with:

  • Sơn Tùng M-TP, one of the biggest stars of the genre.
  • Mỹ Tâm and Hồ Ngọc Hà, long-established pop stars.
  • Hoàng Thùy Linh, known for folk-inspired pop.
  • Đen, a rapper with a huge mainstream following.
  • Bích Phương, AMEE and Min for catchy, bright pop.

Why is folk-pop such a big trend?

In recent years, some of the most talked-about V-pop songs have blended modern beats with Vietnamese tradition: folk melodies, traditional instruments, references to old stories and costumes inspired by historical dress. This gives V-pop a distinct identity that sets it apart from global pop and feels proudly local to Vietnamese audiences, both in Vietnam and abroad.

How do fans discover new V-pop?

  • YouTube premieres and trending lists.
  • Streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and Zing MP3.
  • Short-form video, where song snippets often go viral through dance challenges and memes.
  • TV competitions that launch new singers and rappers.

Short video has become especially important. A catchy hook or a simple dance can push a song far beyond its original audience. Cartoon creators join in too; trend formats like the dances in Duma Meow, a Vietnamese cartoon comedy about four cats, show how quickly pop culture moments get remixed.

Is V-pop good for learning Vietnamese?

It can be motivating and fun. Lyrics teach everyday vocabulary, especially about love and feelings, and singers from different regions expose you to different accents. Keep in mind that melodies bend tones, so use songs for vocabulary and rhythm rather than tone practice.

Pick one V-pop artist from this list, watch two of their official videos with lyrics on, and let the recommendations take you from there.
