Year of the Goat 2027: what Đinh Mùi means

The Year of the Goat 2027 begins on Saturday, February 6, 2027, the first day of Tết, and in the Vietnamese calendar it's called Đinh Mùi. Đinh is the heavenly stem linked to the Fire element, and Mùi is the Goat, so 2027 is often described as the year of the Fire Goat.

The year runs until the next Lunar New Year, which falls in late January 2028.

Breaking down Đinh Mùi

The traditional lunar calendar names each year by combining two cycles:

  • Ten heavenly stems (thiên can), such as Giáp, Ất, Bính, Đinh and so on. Each is linked to one of five elements and to yin or yang.
  • Twelve earthly branches (địa chi), each matched to a zodiac animal, such as Tý (Rat), Sửu (Buffalo) and Mùi (Goat).

Pairing them gives a 60-year cycle. Đinh is the fourth stem and is associated with yin Fire. Mùi is the eighth branch, the Goat. So Đinh Mùi recurs every 60 years. The previous Đinh Mùi year was 1967, and the next will be 2087.

Say Đinh Mùi roughly as "ding MOO-ee," with a level tone on Đinh and a falling tone on Mùi.

Goat or sheep?

In Chinese, the eighth zodiac animal can mean goat or sheep, and English translations go back and forth. In Vietnam, Mùi is usually represented as a goat (con dê). That's why Vietnamese decorations, stamps and greeting cards for Mùi years almost always show goats with beards and curved horns.

Recent Goat years

If you were born in a Goat year, your birth date will fall in one of these lunar years (check the exact Tết date, since the year starts in January or February):

  • 2015 (Ất Mùi)
  • 2003 (Quý Mùi)
  • 1991 (Tân Mùi)
  • 1979 (Kỷ Mùi)
  • 1967 (Đinh Mùi)

If you were born in January or early February, check carefully. A baby born on February 1, 2027, for example, still belongs to the previous year, the Year of the Horse (Bính Ngọ), because Tết hasn't arrived yet.

What the Goat traditionally symbolizes

In zodiac lore, the Goat is commonly associated with gentleness, creativity, kindness and a love of peace. People born in Goat years are often described as warm, artistic and calm. These traits are folk associations, not science, and many people enjoy them as a fun cultural tradition rather than a guide to personality.

In Vietnamese culture, the goat is also connected with rural life and the countryside. Some regions are known for goat dishes, and the animal shows up in folk art and Tết decorations during Mùi years.

What about the Fire element?

The heavenly stem adds an element to each year. Đinh corresponds to Fire, and in traditional interpretation, yin Fire is often likened to a candle or lamp: warm and steady rather than explosive. Astrologers and almanac writers use this to make predictions about the year, but interpretations vary widely and aren't something to rely on for big decisions.

How Vietnamese families mark a Goat year

You'll see goats everywhere around Tết 2027: on red envelopes, calendars, shop windows and giant flower displays in city centers. Families might:

  • Hang decorations featuring goats alongside traditional peach or apricot blossoms
  • Choose a first visitor whose zodiac age is considered compatible with the Goat; see xông đất
  • Give lì xì in goat-themed envelopes
  • Wish Goat-year friends a special year, since your own zodiac year is sometimes considered a year to be careful

The idea that your own birth-animal year can bring challenges is a widely known belief across East Asia. Some people wear red or take small precautions; many just enjoy the excuse for extra attention.

Key dates for Tết 2027

  • Ông Táo (Kitchen Gods' day): Saturday, January 30, 2027
  • New Year's Eve (Giao thừa): Friday, February 5, 2027
  • Tết (first day of Đinh Mùi): Saturday, February 6, 2027

Our guide to when Tết 2027 falls has more detail on the holiday period.

How the Vietnamese zodiac differs

The Vietnamese zodiac follows the same 12-branch system as China's, with two well-known differences: Vietnam has the Cat where China has the Rabbit, and the Buffalo where China has the Ox. We explain the cat in why Vietnam has a Year of the Cat, and you can meet all twelve animals in the Vietnamese zodiac guide.

If someone you know was born in 1967, Đinh Mùi 2027 is their 60-year return, a milestone worth a special Tết wish.
